The Power of One is a community-wide collaboration dedicated to addressing the issue of youth violence and gang affiliation through positive role modeling and one-to-one mentoring. One person can make a difference. Many of these children are eager for a better life than the one they see ahead of them, but have no one to show them a new way. Research has provided dramatic evidence that structured mentoring programs using trained volunteers are effective tools for preventing substance abuse and delinquency.

A national study revealed that an at-risk youth matched in a year-long mentoring relationship is:

46% less likely to become involved in drugs and alcohol.

50% less likely to skip school.

33% less likely to commit a violent act against another person.

More likely to show improvements in school performance and peer relationships.
